Candi Banyunibo is located about two kilometers to the the southeast of the Ratu Boko historical park on the east side of modern Yogyakarta. To the South are the Gunung Kidul hills. Constructed during the 9th century, Candi Banyunibo has a curved rooftop design with a solitary stupa as its crowning motif, that theme that is unique among the surviving Buddhist temples of Central Java. The main structure was originally surrounded by stupas at ground level, the foundations of which can still be seen today.
